For the 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, End FGM EU wants to highlight how Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is framed within Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence against Women (VAW).
The aim of our 2021 campaign (#EndFGM4All) is to highlight the intersection between FGM and other forms of discrimination and violence. Thus, in November 2021, we will address how FGM is an integral part of patriarchal violence. The video will raise awareness on Gender-Based Violence and the fact that women can be victims of multiple forms of violence simultaneously, including FGM: multi- survivor women.
The objective of the video is to raise awareness on Violence Against Women, focusing on FGM in Europe.
The aim is to show how one woman can be experiencing different forms of violence as a result of the global patriarchal system, and how FGM is another type of this Violence Against Women. We would like to show the general public the resilience of FGM Survivors who experience different forms of violence (e.g: forced marriage, domestic violence). We also want to show the global sisterhood and solidarity that can exist between women who have been victims of VAW.
The target will be the general public, FGM-affected communities living in Belgium and Europe and other organisations fighting against VAW.
FGM is another form entangled in the net of violence that women can experience as a consequence of the patriarchal system. In the video, we aim to show how an FGM Survivor may also be experiencing other forms of violence and that FGM itself is a legitimate part of the patriarchal violence apparatus (often we single out FGM as “not the same” as other “normal/common” forms of violence, it’s not true, they are all justified by the same system and they all seek to control and oppress women).
